I have served as campus VP and chair of the contract committee for two years. I have 13 years of service to the university. My main goal will be to prepare to negotiate our next contract in July 2011. My committee will conduct research to gather data to bring to the table, including assessments of: 1) supervisors, e.g., the SCP process, training and support on the job, et cetera;
2) worklife/workload issues, e.g., work hours, transportation, child/elder care; and 3) effectiveness of the current contract and the grievance procedure.
In addition, I would like to create a culture at Rutgers where our members view working with the union as a form of public service, similar to anything where there is a strong sense of community and collectively shared accomplishment. Being actively involved in the URA has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. I hope to convey this to our members and inspire everyone to take part going forward. |
