Darlene Smith
Candidate for Newark Vice President
Darlene Smith
What experience do you have with URA-AFT?
I’ve been part of the URA-AFT since Jan. 2007. After seeing, first-hand, the commitment to the rights of employees and the care and concern of being an inclusive group I not only decided to join but to become an active member of the URA-AFT. I have the honor of serving on the Negotiations team, being a Steward, a member of the Prof. Development Committee, Grievance Committee chair and serving as the Newark Vice-President.

As Newark Vice-President I am blessed to work with a diverse and supportive group of people, not only on my campus but across the entire University. I accept the challenges and cherish the accomplishments that lead to improved work conditions in Newark and build pride as a Rutgers employee.

What goals would you like to accomplish in the next three years?
I look to build a strong Stewardship in Newark, have more members participating in the URA-AFT, working across the board with other unions and non-unionized employees, build strong ties with the state lawmakers who support the union’s causes, and educate management on employee rights and respecting their employees.

What skills or qualifications do you bring to the position?
A 21-year employee of Rutgers, starting in COLT and advancing to an administrative position, I’ve earned my B.A. in Political Science from Univ. College-NB and a J.D. in Law from Rutgers-Nwk. I’ve continued my education by attending the Union Leadership Academy and participate in trainings and conferences so that I can strengthen my knowledge to assist the URA-AFT and to share what I have learned with others.
